Things to do in Yr Wyddfa - Snowdon

Things to see and visit during your Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) climb

Take the Hike

There are six main hiking routes that take you to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). They are all classed as strenuous walks and take 6-8 hours even for the most experienced walkers.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

Snowdon Mountain Railway is notably one of the most scenic routes in the world and scales the majority of the iconic Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) mountain. This round trip is the easiest way to spectate awe-inspiring views if you’re not an avid hiker or have a disability that prevents you from being able to hike. Never miss out on the opportunities that Eryri (Snowdonia) presents. By taking a trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, you’ll still feel on top of the world.

Hafod Eryri

Hafod Eryri, the UK’s highest visitor centre, is positioned at the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and is one of Wales’s most popular tourist attractions. From the centre itself, views of magnificent mountainous landscape can be seen through panoramic windows that stretch the length of the cafe. Dietary needs are catered for including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free meals and you can commemorate your visit with a unique souvenir from the Summit gift shop. It is believed that the first visitor summit was built as early as 1820, and today the renovated centre withstands mountain weather to shelter you as you glory over miles from one of the most famous peaks in Europe.

Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus

The Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus presents a low-pressure method of exploring the area around Yr Wyddfa as well as providing a sustainable method to and from the mountain. In the summer months, parking can become restricted due to the number of visitors, so using the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus is the ideal way to ensure you make your way up to the summit without parking getting in the way. The bus stops at several locations around the base of the mountain, each of them a stone’s throw away from each of the walking routes. Plan your visit today.

Copper and Slate Mines

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) has a rich history founded in copper and slate mining, the remnants of which still exist in its slopes today. The crushing mill and barracks litter the miner’s path, each a reflection of its industrial path; the marks of a retired giant that has long since been appreciated for its beauty and magnitude rather than the resources it can offer.

Flora and Fauna

Millions of years of geological events and weathering have formed the sloping towers of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) into the mountain we know today, and it is this which has formed the vast variety of flora and fauna that bloom from the rocks. From durable arctic alpine flowers to rare upland breeds, there’s plenty of life to see. Yr Wyddfa is also home to wild mountain goats, Peregrine Falcons and Rainbow Leaf Beetles, the likes of which live off the plethora of plant species that line the mountainside.
