In the depths of Eryri National Park, a land of mighty mountains, of mist and mysticism, of folklore flanked forests and rushing rivers, it’s difficult to imagine a single square mile of land that isn’t steeped in storytelling. Fact or fiction, it hardly seems relevant when these troubled tales of dragons, kings, giants, and fairies have shaped communities and connection to a landscape that is beloved globally.

Rooted in the natural world, these poignant fables are inseparable from the landscape itself, and from Rhyd y Galen , you can still visit the sweeping sites that hold their stories close, and take them home with you to treasure.

The Red and White Dragon

In the shadow of the hills near Dinas Emrys, the land itself is said to have once trembled with conflict, not of men, but of something far older.

The story tells of a king who sought to build his fortress upon this ground, yet no matter how often the walls were raised, they fell without reason. It was only when a young boy, later known as Merlin, revealed the truth that the mystery began to unfold. Beneath the hill lay a hidden pool, and within it slept two dragons: one red, the other white.

When the earth was opened, the dragons awoke, and their battle shook the very foundations of the land. The red dragon, fierce and unyielding, emerged victorious. It was said to be a sign; a symbol of the struggles yet to come, and of a people who would endure.

Even now, the red dragon remains a powerful emblem of Wales, its origins bound to the hills of Eryri.

The Legend of Gelert

The legend of Beddgelert is not a cheerful one. It documents the tragic tale of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn the Great and his beloved hound Gelert, a faithful companion and friend. On an unfortunate day in the 13th century, the prince abounded on a hunting trip and left Gelert behind, though no stories can quite account for the absence of the hound.

Upon his return, Gelert bounded towards Prince Lleyelyn but his coat was smeared with blood. The Prince ran to his infant son’s cradle, finding it empty. In a fit of despair and rage, he slayed Gelert, plunging his sword into the hound’s side. The resounding howl was answered by the cry of a baby, and, distraught, Lleyelyn found his son’s smiling form beside the body of a wolf which the brave Gelert had slain to protect his master’s kin. The Prince was said to never smile again.

Today, you can visit Gelert’s Grave beside the village of Beddgelert beside the mountains. Although many accounts dispute this site as the final resting place of the noble companion, it is still a well loved spot amongst locals and tourists alike.

The Lady of the Lake

In the still waters of Llyn Ogwen, beneath the watchful presence of Tryfan, lies a story tied to one of the most enduring legends of all.

It is said that this lake was once home to the Lady of the Lake, the mysterious figure who bestowed upon King Arthur his sword, Excalibur. A weapon of legend, it remained with him throughout his life, until the time came for it to be returned. After Arthur’s final battle, the task fell to Sir Bedivere. Standing at the water’s edge, he cast the sword into the lake. From the depths, a hand emerged, catching the blade and drawing it beneath the surface, where it was lost once more to the world above.

Though the tale is disputed and retold in many forms, there is something about Llyn Ogwen that lends itself to belief. Its waters are dark and still, its depths unknowable, just enough to suggest that some stories may yet lie hidden beneath the surface.

The Tale of Bedd y Cawr

Among the rugged reaches of Eryri is the tale of Bedd y Cawr, the “Giant’s Grave,” a site said to mark the resting place of a being far older than memory itself.

Scattered across Britain are burial mounds whose origins were once unknown, their purpose obscured by time. Many came to believe they were the resting places of giants. One such mound lies near Bryneglwys, where a solitary standing stone rises from the remains of the tomb. It is said to mark the grave of a giant warrior, struck down in some long forgotten battle fought in the surrounding fields.

Yet it is not only the giant that lingers in local memory, but the stone itself. In later years, a farmer is said to have taken it, intending to use it as a gatepost. But the land, it seems, did not take kindly to its removal. No matter how firmly it was set, the stone would not stand. Each morning it was found fallen once more, and with it came restless nights and troubling dreams. Only when the stone was returned to its place upon the mound did the disturbances cease, as though something ancient had been set right.

Today, the site remains quiet and easily overlooked. Whether a burial ground or legend shaped by time, Bedd y Cawr stands stoic amongst the mountains.

Yr Wyddfa and Rhitta Gawr

The highest peak in Wales is, itself, legend steeped.

Long before it was known as Yr Wyddfa, the summit was said to be the resting place of Rhitta Gawr, a giant of immense strength and even greater pride. He roamed the land challenging kings, taking from each their beard as a mark of his dominance, stitching them together into a cloak that told of his victories.

But one beard remained beyond his reach, that of King Arthur.

When the challenge was made, Arthur did not yield. Their battle was fierce and final, fought upon the very ground that now rises as the mountain’s peak. In the end, Rhitta fell and stones were piled high over his body, forming the cairn that would become Yr Wyddfa itself.

The Legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod

Beyond the mountains, where land meets the restless sea, lies one of Wales’ most haunting legends, that of Cantre’r Gwaelod, a kingdom said to have been swallowed by the waters of Cardigan Bay.

Long ago, in myth alone, this fertile lowland was protected by great sea walls and gates, holding back the tide and allowing its people to prosper. Yet the safety of the realm rested in human hands, and as many tales warn, it takes only a moment of carelessness to undo even the strongest defences.

On a fateful night, the keeper of the gates, whether through neglect, drink, or simple misfortune, failed in his duty. As the tides rose, the sea poured in without restraint, consuming fields, homes, and all that lay in its path.

By morning, the kingdom had vanished beneath the waves.

It is said that, on quiet evenings when the sea lies still, the bells of Cantre’r Gwaelod can still be heard ringing beneath the water.

The Tylwyth Teg

Not all of Eryri’s legends are coated in tragedy. Some are carried on the wind or glimpsed at the edge of sight. Among these are tales of the Tylwyth Teg, the Fair Folk, said to dwell in the hidden places of the Welsh landscape.

The Tylwyth Teg are beings of another realm, bound to the hills, lakes, and hollowed spaces beneath the earth. They are known to favour beauty and music, and to take offence where respect is lacking. Travellers once spoke of hearing distant melodies drifting across the valleys at dusk, or of lights flickering where no fire burned.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Eryri (Snowdonia)?

Mountains, mist, sunshine, showers, from golden summer evenings to crisp, fog blanketed winter mornings, Wales is a country whose skies are constantly changing; an excellent example of an area where you can experience all four seasons in one day is Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Not so far from civilization that you are unable to stay right in the heart of it, but so far removed that every valley and mountain raised from the ground can immerse you in a dramatic concave of stormy weather and saturated grass, of warmth and wilderness and walking boots caked in mud all in the space of one unplanned trek.

For some this might sound unpleasant, but for the thousands of visitors who take to Eryri (Snowdonia)'s sweeping summits every month, this is exactly its appeal. However, if you do happen to stumble upon the wrong time of year, you might be less pleasantly surprised—unless, of course, you had already planned a long list of exciting indoor activities and charming pub lunches along the way. So, you are probably asking, when exactly is the best time to visit Eryri (Snowdonia) and what should I plan while I'm there? Rhyd y Galen Caravan Park is about to explain.

An approximate explanation of Rhyd y Galen’s climate

It's quite difficult to give an accurate description of a country's yearly climate, but having a solid understanding of the overall weather can help you plan for both best and worst case scenarios.

Eryri (Snowdonia) has a temperate maritime climate, meaning summers are generally mild rather than hot and winters can be cold, wet, and occasionally snowy. Rain is possible year round. Temperatures typically range from around 2–7°C in winter to 14–19°C in summer, with July being the warmest month.

Rainfall is fairly consistent, though late autumn and winter tend to be the wettest, while late spring and early summer are often drier.

In short, there is never a bad time to visit Eryri (Snowdonia), but there are definitely times where you can expect far warmer weather, like any other country.

March-May

After the quiet of winter, the valleys begin to turn green again, wildflowers appear, the cold weather breaks into slightly less cold weather, and waterfalls are often at their most dramatic thanks to recent rainfall. It’s often considered one of the loveliest times to explore on foot. Temperatures typically sit between 9°C and 14°C, making it comfortable for walking without overheating.

March can still feel a little wintery and is often full of sweeping showers and light lilts of rainfall, but by April and May, your holiday will be full of lighter evenings and a sense of budding energy across the region.

The best activities in spring include:

September-October

The Deep Mine Tour at Llechwedd takes visitors on a guided journey into a Victorian slate mine, descending far below ground to discover how this remarkable landscape was shaped by generations of miners.

As you explore, you’ll move through vast underground chambers and tunnels carved directly from the rock, learning how slate was extracted and why the industry was so important to North Wales. 5 Whimsical Waterfall Walks in Eryri (Snowdonia)

We are a species drawn to falling water; the sound, the sight, the sensation of it sprinkling our skin and reminding us that we are one and the same. That nature can be magical. That folklore exists for a reason. And Wales’ expansive mountain ranges and untouched national parks provide the perfect environment for waterfalls to be forged and forgotten, loved and lived in.

Rhyd y Galen Caravan Park is proud of its heritage. Surrounded by Eryri (Snowdonia National Park), we are only a stone’s throw from some of the most whimsical and beautiful waterfalls in Wales, and following this guide, you can plan your adventures to find them for yourself.

Rhaeadr Fawr (Aber Falls)

Rhaeadr Fawr, known widely as Aber Falls, is situated in the foothills of the Carneddau mountains, known for having the longest continuous area of high ground in Eryri National Park. Framed by lush green shrubbery and archeological remains, the path that leads to Aber Falls is commonly walked by people of all abilities; wheelchair users capable of this walk although accompaniment is advised due to uneven terrain in areas.

At the start of the route, you’ll find Y Bontnewydd (The New Bridge), historically used by drovers who drove sheep and cows hundreds of miles over the breadth of Snowdonia, crossing over bridges just like this one. The area is still home to free roaming ponies who can be spotted grazing amongst the peaks.

Conwy Falls (Fairy Glen)

Conwy Falls Forest Park is home to two of the most beloved natural attractions and you can access both via a circular walk that leads you straight to the cascading water of the falls and back through protected ancient woodland. If you and your family find enrichment in fairytale forest adventures, then you’ll feel right at home amongst the unblemished scenery and whispering trees.

Aber Falls is cushioned in a gorge, accessed by natural pathways that are not suitable for buggies. Picnics and dogs are welcome so you can submerge yourself in the atmosphere but not the water as taking a dip is not allowed for visitor safety.

Alongside Conwy Falls sits the Fairy Glen, which is just as beautiful an attraction as the waterfall itself. Once you have muddied your walking boots, you can warm your hands with a hot drink and bite to eat at Conwy Falls Cafe .

Ceunant Mawr Waterfall (Llanberis Waterfall)

The walk to Llanberis Waterfall is treasured by the local communities as it is as easy to walk as it is worth the views, as well as being walkable from the village center. Situated at the base of Snowdon, this walk is ideal for visitors who want to immerse themselves in the mountains without making the hike to the summit.

The path to the falls is short and concrete, but there is a slight incline so children and puppies will have no issue finding their way. This waterfall is a sight to behold in wet weather, gushing into the pool below. The sound of falling water will never feel as therapeutic or encompassing as this.

Afon Cwm Llan (Watkin Path Waterfall)

The Watkin Path is one of the more difficult waterfall walks in Snowdonia, but the rewards are aplenty. Snaking up the side of Snowdon, you luckily don’t have to walk very far to find Watkin Path Waterfall or the sparkling Watkin Pools because it’s only partway up the Watkin Path. Whether you choose to continue on with your trek and find your way to the mountain’s peak, or spend some time dipping your feet in the crystal clear water is entirely up to you.

However, if you are continuing on your climb then we would recommend not spending too long lingering as the hike up Snowdon can be long and arduous and you wouldn’t want to find yourself missing the peak.

Rhaeadr Ewynnol (Swallow Falls)

Just a short walk up the Swallow Falls Trail, accessible from Betws-y-Coed, you’ll find Swallow Falls, one of Wales’ most recognisable and mystical waterfalls. Featured in films and visited from afar, this path is considered an area of outstanding natural beauty and you only need take a look to understand why.

Inside the Eryri (Snowdonia) wilderness, immersed high in the mountains or lurking in the depths of waterways, you’ll find a world of wildlife that takes you away from the common city and plops you straight into the backdrop of a storybook. From the common to the endangered, creatures you’ll need an expert eye to see, and even some who plop themselves right in front of you, there’s no feeling quite like separating yourself from the roads and stepping into a life untouched by humans, where the wild and the wonderful thrive.

Badgers

Badgers, although difficult to spot in forests, are one of the most distinctive and beloved animals in the UK with their black and white facial markings and shiny black snout. Found mainly in woodland and active at night, there’s something particularly special about spotting a wild badger bounding between the trees; a sight few have seen off camera.

The stuff of storybooks and folklore, badgers live in underground tunnels called setts that are protected by the law; if you happen upon one, mind your feet and leave them undisturbed. But, if you’re patient, you might catch the tip of a nose emerging into dusk.

Rainbow Leaf Beatle

The Snowdon leaf beetle is a unique species found only in very specific parts of the world, including the slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). And yes, it is often referred to as the rainbow leaf beetle for exactly the reason you’d expect; its shell is a remarkable iridescent array of colours. It is classified as an endangered animal because the climate it thrives in, high mountainous regions, is under threat from climate change, so it is even more important that individuals visiting this region find and celebrate this wonderful, and tiny creature.

Flightless and easily disguised in a flower power parade, we highly recommend making your ascent even more special by putting the Snowdon leaf beetle on your wildlife spotting list.

Wild Mountain Goats

Welsh mountain goats have occupied the mountains and hilly terrain of Eryri (Snowdonia) for centuries. Forming family herds, these furry creatures are easily identifiable by their prominent curved horns and are hard to miss if you visit the Ogwen Valley. They have the appearance of domestic goats but, despite the belief that they’re descended from agricultural species, they roam the valley freely, providing a necessary service to the ecosystems of Snowdonia National Park.

Be warned, however, because if you visit this valley and hear a loud cry that sounds like a stranded human calling for help, it might just be a goat. As wonderful as the scruffy wanderers appear, they are known to confuse hikers with their loud calls, causing mountain rescue to be called out on a number of unnecessary rescue missions.

Red Billed Chough

The red billed chough is rare and elegant, boasting sleek black feathers and a bright red curved bill and equally vivid legs, making them a distinctive sight out in Eryri’s countryside.

Choughs favour cliff edges and upland pastures, often performing dramatic aerial displays as they forage for insects. Eryri is one of the few safe havens for this protected species, so catching sight of one can feel akin to finding treasure. Listen for their distinctive, cheerful call bouncing off the rocky slopes.

Water Voles

Water voles are making a quiet return to riverbanks in Snowdonia, and it’s a true joy to catch one nibbling on the side of a marsh or stream. Water voles look like small brown rats, with more rounded bodies and tiny paws that they use to hold on to grass. They have small ears and a fluffy tail, known to be elusive as they hide in their waterside nests.

Telltale signs of a water vole include grass that is cut at a 45 degree angle, and a small burrow nearby. They tend not to venture far from their nests, so if you find one, the vole won’t be far away.

Common Frog

If you’re not lucky enough to spot a water vole, then you might just find common frogs in their stead, springing from patch to patch of damp grassland like tiny acrobats. These amphibians are common by name and common by nature across Snowdonia’s wetlands, ponds and marshy hollows.

Olive green or brown with dark markings, they are masters of vanishing into the undergrowth, but if you pause a moment and let your eyes adjust, you may notice a sudden leap or the soft plop of a frog disappearing into water. During early spring, you might even see clusters of frogspawn, gelatinous signs that the next generation is on its way. It’s always best to observe from a respectful distance to avoid disturbing these delicate early life stages.

Bottlenose Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises

Snowdonia’s coastline is alive with some of the UK’s most charismatic marine wildlife. Out in Cardigan Bay , bottlenose dolphins carve through the waves with effortless grace, often travelling in playful pods that leap and twist as if performing just for you. They’re larger than many people expect, with a reputation for curiosity around boats.

Cuckoos

While they may not win any wildlife parenting awards, they certainly add character to the chorus of birdsong around the National Park.

Hiking

Let’s start with the obvious, right? Mount Snowdon is one of the biggest mountains in the UK, and this region attracts millions of people every year to tackle this challenging and breathtaking route. The summit of Yr Wyddfa has six paths that you can take. These include:

Even when the skies are grey and the mornings cold, camping in Wales is magical. From misty valleys and crackling campfires to rosy cheeks and frosty air, there’s something timeless about wrapping yourself in nature’s quiet. But there’s one truth every camper learns early: staying warm is key to making it all comfortable and unforgettable.

So pack your layers, prep your hot drinks, and embrace the magic of the Welsh countryside. The crisp mornings and starlit nights are always better when you’re warm enough to enjoy them. At Rhyd y Galen , we know all about it.

1. Choose the Right Tent

First things first: if you're camping in unpredictable British weather, you need to think of your tent as more than just a roof. It’s your pop up home for the duration of your stay.

Opt for a three season tent with strong wind resistance and a high waterproof rating. If you're glamping or staying on one of our pitches, a four season option or even an insulated hut can add an extra layer of comfort. These tents offer sturdier poles, stronger fabric, and better insulation against wind and rain.

Pitching position also matters. Setting up on higher ground can be windier and colder, so look for sheltered spots near hedgerows, trees, or natural windbreaks. Avoid low dips in the land, as these collect cold air and damp overnight.

2. Sleep Smart

If you’re worried about the cold, then you’ve probably done your research into the warmest, cosiest sleeping bags you can find. And whilst these are your best option for bedding on chilly nights, there are also a few other things you can do to retain heat as you slumber:

Sleeping bag : Match its rating to the lowest temperature you expect; even summer can dip low in late spring or autumn. A bag rated to around –5 °C (20 °F) often hits the sweet spot for one sleeper comfort.

Sleeping pad : Don’t settle for anything less than an insulated, thick pad. A good pad separates you from frigid ground that’s more cold than comfort.

Liners or quilts : Add a fleece or synthetic liner inside your bag for extra warmth and easier layering control.

Thermal clothing: Your head will be exposed even when you’re tucked neatly into your sleeping cocoon, so make sure you have a hat on hand, and wrap up in thermal pyjamas.

Avoid too many layers: Contrary to popular belief, wearing many layers is not as effective as wearing only a couple really effective layers. 1. Do you have access to a fridge?

Access to a fridge will naturally give you more options on your trip as you will be able to store chilled food. You’ll be able to store chilled milk, fruit mixes, breakfast meats like sausage and bacon, yoghurts and other foods that are perishable if left at room temperature.

If you don’t have access to a fridge, which will be the case unless you’re staying in a caravan or glamping hut, you could purchase a coolbox. Some coolboxes will need access to a charger which most common campsites provide. It is worth noting that if you’re not a regular camper, then the investment might not be worth it, but it’s definitely something that nomads and regular camping holiday goers should look into as an option.
If you don’t have access to a fridge, then you might need to get a bit creative.

2. Are you staying in a glamping hut or caravans with access to a stove?

If you’re glamping or caravanning then you will have access to both a fridge and a stove, which is a camping luxury. You can cook almost anything you desire.

If not, then it’s possible you could look into camping stoves.

You might even be on a campsite with access to a BBQ, which would greatly increase your options.

3. Will the campsite allow a camping stove?

If you’re camping the traditional way, with a tent, sleeping bag, and minimal amenities, then you may need a campaign stove. Camping stoves are very handy if you prefer hot food on holiday, or are cooking for a family as they are portable and can hold large pots and pans.

It’s important to check with the campsite if they’re allowed, because some owners aren’t comfortable with open flames on their site.

4. Is there anything to prep beforehand?

Meal planning is really important to make sure you have the right amount of food and don’t leave anything behind. Make a list of every meal you plan on having on every day you’re away for your convenience.

There is nothing worse than getting to a campsite and realising that, of all the things, you’ve forgotten the tea.

5. The weather

Whilst rain and windy weather won’t affect cooking in your kitchen, it will be very problematic if you’re trying to cook outside.

Make sure you check the weather before you go on your trip so you can plan accordingly. There may be days where the weather is not conducive to campfires and outdoor stoves, so having something that’s easy to grab or a reservation at a local cafe will make your holiday so much easier.

6. How you will clean up after

Some people don’t consider that cooking equipment and crockery will still need to be cleaned, even on holiday. Some campsites will have cleaning facilities on site so you can wash everything up, but it’s always worth checking.

You can also prepare for the wind by getting a windshield for your camping stove.

Things you need for a camping breakfast

You won’t be able to reach into a drawer and grab the perfect bit of equipment for your meal so you need to make sure you have everything you possibly need packed and ready to go for your holiday.

Breakfast ideas

Overnight oats

Overnight oats do require a fridge but they don’t require an oven. They can be a really great breakfast for your first day away, because they are easy to make, and you can prepare them in advance so you’re not rushing around.

All you need to do is soak the oats in the milk of your choice for a couple of hours - stored in the fridge - and then eat them up.

Pancakes

If you have access to a stove then pancakes are a failsafe option for a camping breakfast. There are very few people who don’t like a stack of pancakes for breakfast, and as far as camping goes, there’s very little that can go wrong.

To start with, you can easily make pancakes without any refrigerated ingredients by substituting cow’s milk for plant based milk or cupboard milk, and keeping your butter in an airtight container. Butter is an ingredient that you can keep in a butter dish out of the fridge for days without it going off, so is actually fairly easy to take on a camping trip.

You can bring a number of toppings for pancakes to keep things different and cater for the different tastes of your camping crew:

Fruit like berries and bananas
Syrups
Nut butters
Lemon and sugar

Scrambled eggs on toast

A good breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast is irresistible to most on a camping holiday and easy to whip up, especially in bulk. Bring some dried herbs and pepper with you to sprinkle over the top and hey presto. You have an easy, energy packed, and filling breakfast to start your day of adventuring off the right way.

We recommend bringing condiments for your eggs on toast like ketchup, brown sauce, and vinegar in packets rather than bottles because they can be stored outside of the fridge and take up less space in your luggage.

Smashed avocado on toast

If a stove isn’t an option, or you want something a little bit healthier than egg on toast, smashed avocado on toast could be a real winner.

Get yourself a nice loaf of sourdough bread, smash some avocado straight from the skin, sprinkle over those herbs and pepper we mentioned earlier, and you’ve got a tasty, oven free breakfast.
You can even jazz it up by adding:

Balsamic vinegar
Pickled egg
Herbs like fresh parsley
Condiments

Pastries

Easy as pie, maybe even literally, pastries are a truly staple camping breakfast. You can buy them premade from a bakery and pop them on a plate and you have a quick grab and go breakfast option.

Consider croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon buns, danish pastries, babka, brioche buns, muffins, or anything else you fancy.

Cereal

Then we have the most obvious option: cereal. Once again, bring the milk of your choice (cupboard milk, oat milk, almond milk, soy milk), and throw it together in the morning for something fibre rich and energy boosting.

Breakfast burrito

A slight step up from the traditional fried breakfast, you could try making breakfast burritos on your camping trip.

A breakfast burrito requires very little cooking if you don’t feel like doing much, and can be made by filling a tortilla with scrambled eggs, hash browns, diced tomato, parsley, lime, avocado, some kidney beans or pepper if you desire.

The great thing about a breakfast burrito is you can have fun with it, mixing and matching ingredients to find the perfect combination that works for you.

Eat out

And, of course, there is always the option of eating out at a cafe, restaurant, or tea room. Camping doesn’t always mean isolating yourself from every comfort including a hot, tasty breakfast that you don’t have to prepare for yourself.

What to Take Camping: The Ultimate Packing Guide

If you’re embarking on your first camping adventure, then there is a fantastic range of truly wonderful and grounding escapades to throw yourself into, alongside family, friends or your partner. However, to make sure your trip is comfortable as well as exciting, you need to pack all of the right things.

To help make your next staycation as smooth as possible, Rhyd y Galen Caravan Park has put together the ultimate guide on what to put in your tent, once you’ve found the right one.

Clothing Essentials

Unfortunately, no matter how many times we check the weather report, the weather in the UK can be unpredictable so it’s important to be prepared.

Of course, if it’s summer, you don’t want to take up valuable packing space with winter coats and woolen scarfs, and it would be best to avoid sunbathing attire in December, but aside from these little exceptions, here is a little guide on all the clothing you should pack for a camping holiday:

1. The Basics:

We don’t need to tell you to pack t-shirts, trousers, underwear and socks but sometimes, when your mind is stuck on all the other essentials, you can forget to pack the basics. Don’t forget to bring jumpers, a few long sleeved tops, shorts if the weather permits, pyjamas, and a good range of comfy and practical socks.

Our biggest tip is to make sure you have spares of all the basics. Although you’ll want to save packing space, it’s important to prepare for the inevitable: getting muddy.

2. The Coats

Coats are undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of clothing to have with you at any campsite. Depending on the weather and your chosen activities for your holiday, we would recommend packing:

A lightweight, waterproof jacket
A padded windbreaker jacket for walks
An insulated hiking jacket or ski jacket
A good fleece

Whatever the climate, a good quality waterproof jacket is non-negotiable.

3. Footwear

There are a few types of shoes that you can’t afford to miss from your packing list. These include:

4. Thermals

Unless it is the height of summer, thermal innerwear can’t be underestimated. Anyone who’s been camping will tell you that nights are always colder than you expect them to be, and tents provide little protection from the temperature.

Check availability

Yr Wyddfa is a very popular hiking spot, and many people climb it daily. This means that it will be busy, and excess parking can be disruptive to local businesses.

You may also struggle to find parking if you’re driving in, and you’ll want the day to go as smoothly as possible so you can really make the most of the experience.

Check the transport links

The Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus route stops at the start of all six walking routes up Yr Wyddfa. You can catch the bus from Llanberis, so make sure to check the timetables, and the most convenient stop for you before you start your journey.
Accept that every route is challenging

It is important to stress before delving into the routes that all of the routes up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) are challenging, and shouldn’t be attempted without a good level of fitness, strong navigational skills, and an emergency pack containing food, water, a first aid kit, and a way to communicate that you need help.

Decide whether you want a guide

The final push to the summit is steep and rocky, but the sense of achievement upon reaching the top is immense.

Sensory Scavengers : Find items that give you a sensory experience, such as soft things or things that smell nice to you.
Story Scavengers : Tell your kids to find 5 different items then return and create a story that mentions all of them.

Make Yourselves a Hideout

If you’re a frequent woodland walker, or a fan of Winnie the Pooh, then you will be very familiar with the log den. But, you don’t have to keep walking past them and wondering who made them, how they got there, and whether you’re okay to go investigate. Because you can make your very own log den with your children. It’s a great time for them, and a fantastic way to unlock your inner child. And, just like erecting a tent, it is a really great team building activity to bring you closer as a family.

But where do you even start, we hear you ask.

Well, these are some of our top tips combined with the tips of other explorers on how to build the best woodland hideout for returning to, time after time:

Choose the right materials : You need the right building blocks on hand, so make sure you’re surrounded by logs, branches, mud and fallen leaves.
Leave the woods undisturbed : Although logs and twigs are the best material for building your den, make sure that you’re scavenging for already fallen branches and not snapping them off trees. This helps to keep important homes for bugs and birds intact and thriving.
Find the right spot : Or, in other words, find a good tree. Having a sturdy tree to build around can really anchor your branches when you first start to build, and give you something to keep everything in place whilst you hunt for more.
Work as a team : Stacking logs together might not seem like an activity you need a large hoard of helpers for, but when you work together, you’ll find that your creation falls down a lot less during the process. But don’t worry if it does fall down, just show the kids that all you need to do is pick the logs back up and start again.
Choose a technique : Make sure you’re all on the same page about the design of your log fort. Are you building a teepee? Are you aiming for the ultimate Eeyore-style haven? Do you want to make more of a square pen with a roof?
Get your hands dirty : One of the best bits of building a den is getting your hands in the mud and smothering it over the wood so you can attach leaves for waterproofing. Mud really is nature’s glue.
Find ways to make it wildlife friendly : If you fancy adding a little hideaway within your hideaway for hedgehogs and other small animals to find shelter, then don’t be afraid to incorporate this into your design.

Enjoy your den: Building the den is itself a satisfying experience, but it's made so much better when you can snuggle up as a family inside once it’s standing proud. If you set out with the aim of making a den, we recommend bringing a story book or a picnic so you can spend some time in your new home away from home.

Pack a Picnic

Speaking of picnics, what’s an outdoor adventure without a light snack, or even a full meal?

Before you dismiss this idea because you don’t have a picnic hamper or thermal mug, picnics can really be whatever you want them to be. As long as you have some tupperware and an old blanket or towel, you can pack some food away to scoff down in a shady spot.

And the kids will love it.

But wait. Before you start packing in the sandwiches and fruit, look for ways that you can make the food a little more exciting, to really sell the experience. Of course mini sausages and scotch eggs always go a long way, but we love seeing families packing mini pies, shaped sandwiches, pasta shaped salads, welsh cakes and muffins.

We often find that the more selection you have, the more fun the experience can be. Plus, you’ll have plenty of leftovers for future lunches and easy snacks if you’re camping.

Family Sports Day

Family sports days are practically perfect if you’re on a camping or caravanning trip and need ways to entertain your family at the campsite on quieter days.

All you need to do is pack some compact or foam sports equipment and keep it on hand to grab at a moment’s notice. Or, go the full hog and plan an elaborate sports day style activity rota and turn it into a challenge.

Because there’s nothing like a family bonding day that channels your inner competitive spirit.

Climbing Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) is simultaneously one of the most exciting and most daunting things you can do. Nestled in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, this legendary summit is beloved amongst adventurers, mountaineers and locals because of its revered beauty. Home to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, breathtaking lakes and sweeping valleys, anyone embarking on the journey to Yr Wyddfa is in for a treat.

But, despite the reward of reaching the top, scaling Yr Wyddfa requires careful planning, determination and knowledge of what to expect. Located in Eryri ourselves, Rhyd Y Galen attracts many hikers on their way to the mountain’s top, and over the years we have collected plenty of tips and tricks on how to make the journey easier.

How Tall is Yr Wyddfa?

Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) is the tallest mountain in Wales standing at 1,085 metres (3,560 feet) tall.

How Long Does it Take to Climb Yr Wyddfa?

On average, it takes around 4-7 hours to climb Yr Wyddfa. This includes both the climb to the summit and the trek back down.

How to Train for Climbing Yr Wyddfa

No official training is needed for climbing Yr Wyddfa, and many people can reach the top without it, but the fitter you are, the easier the hike will be.

You can prepare yourself by:

1. Familiarising yourself with mountain climbing : Build yourself up to climbing Snowdon by attempting smaller mountain hikes first.
2. Starting your training early : Even a few weeks of training is better than nothing, but building yourself up gradually will be far easier on your mind and body.
3. Focusing on stamina and endurance : The 8 mile trek requires stamina and strength, so practising your cardio can help massively.
4. Stretching your legs : Leg strength is vital, and you must take care of them in the build up to your walk. When training, focus on stretching and resting in between training to keep your muscles in the best condition possible, and prevent injury.

Tips and Advice for Climbing Yr Wyddfa

1. Prepare for the worst

Yr Wyddfa is known for being temperamental with the weather conditions, so make sure you have everything you need for beating sun, pouring rain and whipping winds. But, the changing weather will only make your achievement feel that much more rewarding.

2. Plan your route in advance

It always pays to know where you are going, but when you are planning on climbing Yr Wyddfa, it is not just advised but necessary. There are six main walking routes, and each will suit different people due to the terrain and fitness level required.

3. Pack nourishing snacks

No matter which path you choose, climbing Yr Wyddfa is quite the hike and you will need plenty of food along the way. Choose snacks that are high in energy and take up little space in your backpack like:

You would be surprised at the number of people who climb Yr Wyddfa unprepared. Whether this is without training, in inadequate clothing or without a plan, 200 Mountain Rescue callouts are made yearly, and many of these are due to lack of planning.

Make sure to only climb when you feel emotionally and physically ready for the climb. That way, you’ll be able to soak up all the wonderful things that accompany the hike, without worrying that you won’t complete it.

5. Go for the experience

Not everybody will be able to reach the summit, and that’s okay. This trek is famous for being a challenge, and attempting it at all should be an exciting time, without the added expectation.

If you are unable to complete the climb, you can always try again with the additional knowledge you now have about the route, your physical condition and the people who kept you motivated.

6. Let someone know where you’re going

Regardless of whether you are climbing by yourself or as a group, you should always let someone know of your climb. Inform them of the day, time and route you intend to climb and who you are going with, as well as keeping them updated once you are safely back down.

7. Know the weather

Checking the weather once is not enough. Make sure you know exactly what to expect on the day of the climb by checking the conditions before you set off.

Use the MWIS for accurate and updated information, and be prepared to stop your hike and return to the ground if it becomes too turbulent. Your safety should be your primary concern.

Gelert’s Grave Walk

The village of Beddgelert commemorates the tragic legend of Gelert the Hound, faithful friend to Prince Llywelyn the Great, who was mistakenly believed to have killed the prince’s beloved son. Slain for a murder he did not commit, Gelert’s memory lives on at the grave site where he is commemorated today. Gelert’s grave walk is a riverside trail that takes you through the village and past the final resting place of this folklore hero, and is suitable for those travelling with children.

Cwm Idwal Walk

Cwm Idwal is perfect if you prefer a slightly more strenuous walk and wish to divulge in the mountainous landscape which takes you through the glacial valley of Llyn Idwal. Rhaeadr Ddu and Coed Ganllwyd Walk

Rhaeadr Ddu and Coed Ganllwyd is a National Trust protected circular walk that allows you to take in the glorious sights that surround the River Gamlan in southern Eryri (Snowdonia). Along this route, you will touch base at the Rhaeadr Ddu waterfall that tumbles turbulently through woodland, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of classic British fairy tales, complete with rare and wonderful wildlife. Because the fall of water is largely dependent on the rain patterns, you will behold a slightly different sight each time you visit.
